Norfolk native and former Negro Leagues baseball star Sam Allen will throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the inaugural Battle For The Real Big State Charity Alumni Baseball Game on August 26, 2023 at Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights, VA.
Allen, 87, played for the Kansas City Monarchs in 1957 and the Memphis Red Sox in 1958 as a catcher and outfielder. He is considered a legend for helping break the color barrier in baseball and pave the way for the integration of Major League Baseball.
“We are honored to have a pioneer like Sam Allen be a part of this special day,” said Mike Burd, Co-Founder of the Battle For The Real Big State Charity Alumni Baseball Game and founder of YouTube channel BurdsEyeView. “The Negro Leagues produced some of the most exciting baseball players of all time, and they made it possible for so many others to follow in their footsteps. Sam’s participation will help shine a light on this renewed rivalry and bring power and momentum back to HBCU Sports, specifically baseball for this event".
Proceeds from the charity baseball game will benefit both universities baseball programs, however winner of this game will receive majority of the proceeds donated and ticket sales. The game will feature alumni from both Virginia State University and Norfolk State University facing off in a nine-inning showdown.
“I’m excited to be a part of this charity event that gives back to the community,” Allen said. “Baseball provided me with so many opportunities in life, so I’m happy to support the next generation of players and fans.
Allen was born in Norfolk, Virginia, in 1931. He played baseball throughout his youth and was scouted by the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro American League at the age of 17. He played for parts of two seasons before the Negro Leagues disbanded. Allen was known for his speed, strong arm, and consistent bat.
After his baseball career, Allen worked for the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a pipefitter for more than 30 years. He continues to live in Norfolk and stays active in the local community.
The Battle For The Real Big State Charity Alumni Baseball Game begins at 1PM and gates open at 12 Noon. Tickets are available for purchase at www.battleforbigstate.com and onsite at Shepherd Stadium (901 Meridian Ave, Colonial Heights, VA 23834).
